Experience Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Situated 15 miles from Hampton Inn & Suites Arcata, this spectacular destination has been the habitat for all types of wildlife since 1971. You'll be able to make your way along the many trails and view or photograph the various bird and mammal species that number in the hundreds. You can also spend time in the observation room and use the telescopes to enjoy incredible views. Guided walks of the 4,000-acre Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge are available as well. And if you're into fishing, you'll be able to try your hand at catching Coho and Chinook salmon and steelhead trout in Humboldt Bay.

    Yes, there most definitely are. The Visitor Center at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge boasts a boatload of stations where kids can have a bottomless pit of hands-on fun and get a great education at the same time. They’ll also have access to “Kids Corner,” which features a table for making crafts and coloring along with a wealth of puzzles, nature books, and displays.
  • What kind of wildlife will I see?

    Innumerable creatures abound at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. More than 260 species of birds include raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, and shorebirds. Over 50 mammal species range from bobcats, mountain lions, and coyotes to black-tailed deer, brush rabbits, and pocket gophers. In addition, you’ll have a chance to see such marine mammals as river otters, harbor seals, and California sea lions.
